Sweppen casino resort is a hotel and hospitality estate on the Maltese coastline — sixty-two tables, a theatre carved into limestone, five kitchens, and two hundred and fourteen suites built for people who prefer their luxury unannounced.
Sweppen opened in 1987 as a fourteen-table casino gaming room attached to a fishing-village hotel outside St. Julian's. The original owners, a family of hoteliers with a taste for baccarat, built the first floor by hand — quite literally, hiring the same stonemasons who restored the bastions of Valletta to lay the casino's limestone archways.
Over four decades the estate grew outward rather than upward, wrapping around a natural cove so that no suite, restaurant, or gaming room sits more than a four-minute walk from the water. Today Sweppen operates under a full Malta Gaming Authority licence, employs over 900 people across gaming, culinary, and hospitality divisions, and remains privately held.
Spread across three connected halls — the Colonnade, the Vault, and the private Signet Room — Sweppen's gaming floor is built for depth of play rather than volume of foot traffic. Ceilings run high, tables sit apart, and dealers are trained to remember names, not just wagers.
Our main hall holds twenty-eight tables of American and European roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and three-card poker beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling salvaged from a decommissioned granary. It is the liveliest room in the house, open to all resort guests and day visitors from 11:00 to 04:00.
Live dealers rotate every forty minutes to keep the game sharp, and a resident sommelier pours by request tableside — a Sweppen tradition since the 1990s that guests still ask for by name.
The Vault, our high-limit hall, occupies what was once the estate's actual wine cellar — the arched brick ceilings are original. Access requires a Sweppen Privé card, issued on request at check-in or through our concierge line.
Beyond it sits the Signet Room: four tables, no fixed limits, and a single rule — reservations only, arranged personally through your host. It is where the estate's longest-standing members play baccarat the way it was meant to be played, without an audience.
The Reel Room houses our full slot and electronic table game collection — mechanical three-reel classics through to multi-line video slots and electronic roulette terminals — arranged in low-lit alcoves rather than open rows, so the noise of the floor never quite reaches your seat.
Sixty mechanical and digital three-reel casino slot machines, including two original 1960s Mills machines restored and kept live purely for sentiment.
190 multi-line casino slots including our house progressive jackpot network, linked across all three Sweppen properties in Malta.
Ninety electronic roulette, baccarat, and sic bo terminals for guests who prefer the pace of the game without a live dealer.
Privé membership grants access to two dedicated casino lounges — the Cove Room, overlooking the water, and the windowless, deliberately quiet Archive — along with a private entrance from the underground car park directly into the Vault.
Members receive a personal host, priority reservations at all five restaurants, complimentary suite upgrades on qualifying stays, and an invitation to the estate's quarterly invitation-only tournament weekends.
Each Sweppen restaurant runs its own kitchen, its own hours, and its own point of view — from a single Michelin-recommended dining room to a late-night grill that keeps the gaming floor fed until sunrise.
Our flagship dining room. Modern Mediterranean tasting menus built around the morning catch, served across nine courses.
Dry-aged steaks, an open charcoal hearth, and a wine list that runs to eleven hundred bottles across two cellars.
A round-the-clock lounge kitchen for the gaming floor — raw bar, wood-fired flatbreads, and a bar pour list of forty-two spirits.
Every room at Sweppen faces either the cove or the estate's private gardens. Interiors are the work of Maltese design studio Belliá & Grech, who favour limestone, brushed brass, and linen over anything that could be mistaken for a chain hotel.
Our entry category, at 42m². King bed, walk-in rain shower, and a private balcony angled toward the water rather than the resort itself — a deliberate choice by the architects.
72m² across two rooms, with a soaking tub positioned to catch the sunset, a stocked drinks cabinet restocked to your preference on arrival, and priority booking at the Vault.
A single 210m² residence occupying the estate's original watchtower. Private plunge pool, dedicated butler, and a direct lift to the Signet Room below. One booking per night, no exceptions.
The Aurelia hosts a rotating calendar of jazz residencies, chamber orchestra evenings, and cabaret revues, staged in a hall literally cut from the quarry the original estate was built from. Acoustically, it remains one of the best-reviewed small venues in the Mediterranean.
Sweppen suite guests receive priority seating; Privé members receive two complimentary tickets per stay to any standard performance.
Suites book quickly through the autumn tournament season. Reach our reservations desk directly, or send us your dates below.
Contact ReservationsA privately owned gaming and hospitality estate on the northern coast of Malta, operating since 1987.
Sweppen Resorts Ltd was founded in 1987 by the Debattista-Farrugia family as a fourteen-table gaming room attached to a small coastal hotel. Four decades on, it remains privately held by the same family, now spanning a 214-suite resort, a 62-table casino across three gaming halls, five independently run restaurants, and the 486-seat Aurelia Theatre.
The estate operates under a licence issued by the Malta Gaming Authority and adheres to the jurisdiction's requirements on responsible gambling, anti-money-laundering controls, and player protection. Sweppen employs over 900 people across its gaming, culinary, and hospitality divisions, the majority of whom live within twenty minutes of the property.
Our name has no grand etymology — it comes from Sweppen Point, the small rocky promontory the original hotel was built on. We kept it because everyone who worked there already called it that.
Reservations, gaming enquiries, and general correspondence — our concierge desk responds within one business day.
For same-day reservations or Privé membership enquiries, we recommend calling the concierge line directly rather than using the form.

Gaming at Sweppen is meant to remain entertainment. We provide the tools to help keep it that way.
Sweppen Resorts Ltd is licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority and complies fully with its responsible gambling framework. We believe gaming should remain a form of entertainment, and we train every member of our gaming floor staff to recognise signs of harmful play and to respond with care rather than judgement.
Gambling can become harmful when it starts to affect your finances, relationships, work, or wellbeing. Warning signs include chasing losses, gambling with money set aside for essentials, hiding the extent of your play from family, or feeling unable to stop despite wanting to.
Guests may request voluntary self-exclusion from the Sweppen gaming floor for a period of 6 months, 1 year, or permanently. Requests can be made in person, by phone, or by email, and take effect immediately.
Privé members can set personal spending limits with their host, including daily, weekly, or monthly caps on credit and buy-in amounts across all gaming rooms.
Guests can request a temporary break from gaming floor access ranging from 24 hours to 3 months without a full self-exclusion commitment.
If you are concerned about someone else's gambling, our guest relations team can provide guidance on how to raise the subject and where to find independent family support services, treated with full confidentiality.
The following independent organisations provide confidential advice and support and are not operated by Sweppen Resorts Ltd:
Our guest relations desk can arrange a private conversation with a trained team member at any hour, or connect you directly with an independent support line. Ask any member of staff for "guest relations," or call our front desk directly — no explanation required.
